SNOW DAY - 10th March 2023 - Optional activities
It's snowing!
Here are some fun, outdoor and indoor activities you can complete today in the snow:
- Dress up in warm clothes
- Go sledging – a tray works if you haven’t got a sledge!
- Snowmen are old school. Make a snow-something – an animal or have a go at making one of the Year 6 staff!
- Make a snow angel
- Make hot chocolate with loads of marshmallows on top
Maths:
- Measure how deep the snow is
- Bake (looking at quantities and ratio)
- Make a symmetrical snowflake by painting half and folding the paper over
Science:
- Does snow sink or float? Predict then test. Does it matter if it is a sprinkle or a snowball?
- Who can make a snow-thing (person or animal or just a snowball) that lasts the longest? Where can you put it? Should you wrap it up in a blanket or will that make it melt faster?
- Snowball firing range – set up some toys on a wall. Who can knock the most over?
Lastly and most importantly, have fun and make memories – who knows when it will snow again?!
For those who would rather do more "traditional" learning, the BBC Bitesize activities are really useful. I'll add links below.
Homework is due on Monday (as usual) and we will reschedule the spelling test for Monday too.
Our Precious Planet – Adventures in Space
Year 6 – Jupiter
- Read the Powerpoint about Jupiter or carry out your own research about the planet.
- Create a fact file about Jupiter.
- Draw or paint a picture / collage or make a model of Jupiter.

Please bring all of your learning into school and give it to your teacher.

PE times/kit
In Year 6, P.E. is on Monday and Friday. Please ensure your child has and wears the correct kit at all times. (See PE poster for more details).
All clothing and footwear should be clearly named. All jewellery must be removed for P.E. and long hair must be tied back.
Weekly homework tasks:
- Daily reading at home (home reading book) to an adult
- Spellings (tested weekly)
- TT Rockstars
- Half termly learning log (this will be linked to the themes for the half term)
Daily reading: Your child will receive a home reading book and record. Please hear your child read at home on a regular basis (ideally 5-10 minutes every day) and sign their reading record. When your child has finished their book, they need to hand it in to Miss Mitchell or Mrs Layfield who will change it.
Spellings: We use the No Nonsense Spelling scheme in school. We will be learning words in class that follow a particular pattern/rule. These words, along with a range of others, including Year 5 and 6 statutory words will be tested each week on a Friday. The words and test dates for each week are in the spelling booklets which have been sent home. A copy can also be found on this page.
TT Rockstars / times tables: Please encourage your child to learn all of the times tables (up to 12x12) and their related division facts. This will help your child in several aspects of mathematics. All children have been give a login for Times Table Rock Stars but please feel free to practise in whichever way you feel suits your child.
Half-termly learning log: A 'learning log' will be set each half term. This will be a project or piece of work for the children to complete at home. If you wish to help them and be involved, that's great! Alternatively, the children can complete it independently. It will be sent home in the first week or two of the half term. Children can now upload their completed learning logs onto Seesaw rather than bringing them into school.
