Baseline Assessments in September
When your child starts with us in September, we will spend the first few weeks getting to know them and introducing them to school routines. We will also be carrying out our initial Baseline Assessments. These will help us to gain a clear picture of where your child is working at in terms of areas such as Literacy and Mathematics. We will then be able to plan for their next steps and tailor our learning activities to meet their needs.
Assessments are carried out informally as your child plays and accesses initial activities in their new classroom. They are not a formal process and we strive to gather the information that we need by playing with your child and by getting to know them as an individual.
We do also carry out the Statutory Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). This is an assessment of children's starting points in language, communication and literacy. It also covers mathematics. Children use practical resources to complete a range of activities and the results are recorded on a laptop.
Further information about the Statutory Reception Baseline Assessment is available below.
We also subscribe to the Nuffield Early Language Intervention Programme (NELI). This programme is a fun way of developing children's language skills throughout Reception. As part of our Baseline Assessments, we will assess your child's initial starting point in terms of their Communication and Language using an interactive iPad App. We will then look at the results of this and determine if your child would benefit from taking part in the Early Language Intervention Programme sessions throughout the year. Further information about this will be provided in due course.
