Implementation Statement
Implementation
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in history, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school, building on prior knowledge from previous year groups and providing opportunity for a range of teaching and learning methods.
The history curriculum at St. Stephen’s is based upon the 2014 Primary National Curriculum, which provides a broad framework and outlines the knowledge and skills and taught in each Key Stage. Teachers plan lessons for their class in line with National Curriculum expectations and by using our long-term planning documents. Teachers can use this document to plan their history lessons to suit their class’s interests and what they want to learn.
In Reception/EYFS, children are given the opportunity to talk about their family and develop their understanding of chronology and the concept of changing over time. Children in EYFS broaden their knowledge and understanding of history by investigating change (e.g., how toys have changed) and through reading and performing stories set in different time periods.
At St. Stephen’s, we provide a variety of activities and learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom which ensure the children’s learning is engaging, broad and balanced. A wide range of activities and teaching approaches allows for development of knowledge and skills, enabling children to think critically as historians.
