Implementation Statement
Implementation
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in geography, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school, building on prior knowledge from previous year groups and providing opportunity for a range of teaching and learning methods.
The geography curriculum at St. Stephen’s is based upon the 2014 Primary National Curriculum, which provides a broad framework and outlines the knowledge and skills and taught in each Key Stage. Teachers plan lessons for their class in line with National Curriculum expectations and by using our long-term planning documents. Teachers can use this document to plan their geography lessons to suit their class’s interests and what they want to learn.
In Reception/EYFS, children are given the opportunity to know about the difference and similarities in places and talk about the features of their own environment and how environments might vary from one another. Children in EYFS broaden their knowledge and understanding of the world through discovering the environment in relation to their own lives.
At St. Stephen’s, we provide a variety of opportunities for geography-themed learning inside and outside the classroom. These activities and approaches ensure the children’s learning is engaging, broad and balanced. A wide range of activities and teaching approaches allows for development of knowledge and skills, enabling children to think critically as geographers.
Educational visits are another opportunity for the teachers to plan for additional geography learning outside the classroom. St. Stephen’s provide children with the opportunity to experience practical geography on educational visits within the local and regional area. For example, trips to local parks, rivers and other geographical landmarks serve to enrich the children’s experience of geography.
